Friday night belongs to Lubbock, where two ranked in-state Big 12 teams get the only stage of the evening. Around it: a No. 5 Miami team scoring at a record pace, the Red Sox in Tampa against the team running away with the AL East, and a late Yankees game that matters a lot more to the other dugout.

BOS Red Sox @ TB Rays — 7:10 PM ET

MLB · Watch on New England Sports Network, RAYS.TV, NESN 360, ESPN Unlimited, MLB.TV

The Boston Red Sox (83-70) are in St. Petersburg to face the Tampa Bay Rays (93-59), who have turned the AL East into a formality and own one of the best records in baseball. Boston has a wild card spot in hand and is now sorting out which one, and this is the last read either side gets on the other before October.

NY Liberty @ MIN Lynx — 7:30 PM ET

WNBA · Watch on ION, WNBA League Pass

The New York Liberty (24-16) head to Minneapolis to take on the league leading Minnesota Lynx (31-9) with four games left in the regular season. Minnesota owns the best record in the W and is playing for the top seed. New York is tangled with Washington and Dallas at 24-16 and has ground to make up before the bracket sets.

MIA Miami @ WF Wake Forest — 7:30 PM ET

NCAAF · Watch on ESPN Unlimited

The No. 5 Miami Hurricanes (2-0) visit the Wake Forest Demon Deacons (2-0), where both sides are unbeaten and only one of them is being treated that way. Darian Mensah has thrown for 653 yards and eight touchdowns in two starts, and freshman Malachi Toney already owns a Miami record with 234 receiving yards in a game. The Hurricanes have won the last eight meetings.

HOU Houston @ TTU Texas Tech — 8:00 PM ET

NCAAF · Watch on FOX, FOXONE

The best game of the night is in Lubbock, where the No. 22 Houston Cougars and the No. 13 Texas Tech Red Raiders meet in a ranked in-state Big 12 matchup with a Friday night to itself. Texas Tech has spent the whole offseason being talked about as a conference title contender, and Houston gets the first real chance to test it.

NY Yankees @ ARI Diamondbacks — 9:40 PM ET

MLB · Watch on YES Network+, DBacks.TV, YES, MLB.TV, MLB+, MLB Network

The New York Yankees (88-64) are in Phoenix against the Arizona Diamondbacks (80-73), who sit four games out of the last NL wild card spot with nine left to play. New York holds the top AL wild card and is five back of Tampa Bay in the East. Arizona needs to win nearly all of these, starting here.

SF Giants @ LAD Dodgers — 10:15 PM ET

MLB · Watch on Apple TV

The San Francisco Giants (64-89) close the night in Los Angeles against the LA Dodgers (93-60), who are two games behind the Milwaukee Brewers for the best record in the National League and the bye that comes with it. San Francisco has been out of it for weeks and would like nothing more than to complicate that.
