The rules
NBA Blackout Rules, Explained
01
The Odds of No Blackouts
Alaska is the only unclaimed state, so even if yours doesn’t have a team, it’s likely that you have at least one team claiming your current location.
02
National games do have exceptions.
The NBA limits each team to 34 national games per season, but after a much lower threshold, national games can’t be blacked out locally, meaning your local RSN or carrier can also broadcast the game.
03
It’s where you are, not who you root for.
Territory follows your ZIP and your device’s location. A Lakers fan in Boston gets Lakers games. A Celtics fan in Boston doesn’t.
04
Territories are bigger than you’d think.
Some territories stretch across five states, and they don’t follow state or city lines perfectly.
What won’t lift a blackout
- A VPN breaks League Pass’s terms of service and can get your account closed.
- Upgrading to League Pass Premium doesn’t lift blackouts — it removes ads.
- The playoffs aren’t on League Pass. Every postseason game is a national broadcast.
So what do I actually need?
Blacked out? Here’s what your team’s games actually cost.
NBA League Pass alone won’t cover your local team. We price the cheapest full setup for every NBA market — local channels, regional networks and the national services.
Common questions
Why is NBA League Pass blacked out?

What are the NBA blackout rules?
Inside a team’s home territory, that team’s games are blacked out live on League Pass. Nationally televised games are blacked out for every US subscriber.

Yes — the map on this page shows every team’s territory. Lines follow ZIP codes, so enter yours for an exact answer.
How do I watch blacked-out NBA games?

Does League Pass include the playoffs?
No. Every playoff game is a national broadcast, so none are on League Pass.
